We are pleased to announce that at its meeting on 4 November the Joint Science Conference (GWK) approved 4Memory's consortial application. In the name of the eleven co-applicant institutions, we thank our community -- particularly our many participants -- for their consistent and patient support.

4Memory is one of 8 consortia approved in the NFDI’s third and final round of applications. It now joins the nineteen consortia that have already begun building up the NFDI. We look forward to working together in the coming years to provide a voice for the historically oriented humanities in the NFDI.
Wie die gesamte deutsche Wissenschaftscommunity verfolgen wir von NFDI4Memory aufmerksam die aktuellen Meldungen über Förderungskürzungen seitens des BMBF.
Dass auch die NFDI und vor allem die Konsortialinitiativen der dritten Ausschreibungsrunde (wozu 4Memory gehört) von den Kürzungen betroffen sein könnte, hat verständlicherweise zu einer breiten Unsicherheit in unser Community der historisch arbeitenden Geisteswissenschaften geführt und eine rege Diskussion entfacht.
Zur Zeit liegen uns keine offiziellen Mitteilungen wegen einer möglichen Kürzung der NFDI-Fördermittel vor. Wir erwarten weiterhin, dass die Konsortialinitiativen der dritten Runde, die im November von der GWK bewilligt werden, ihrer Arbeit zügig und unter den selben Bedingungen wie die bereits bewilligten Konsortien der ersten und zweiten Runde aufnehmen können.
Die NFDI spielt eine Schlüsselrolle in der strategischen Zukunftsorientierung der deutschen Wissenschaft. Es ist essentiell, dass möglichst viel Fächer in der NFDI vertreten sind und dies setzt voraus, dass weitere Konsortien aus der dritten Runde zu den 19 schon bewilligten Konsortien hinzukommen. Sonst bliebe die Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur ein Torso.
Die Co-applicant Institutionen von 4Memory sind schon aktiv, ein klares Bild der drohenden Kürzungen oder Verschiebungen zu bekommen. Wir stehen im Kontakt mit den relevanten wissenschaftspolitischen Akteuren.
Insbesondere beraten wir mit den weiteren geisteswissenschaftlichen Partner in der Memorandum of Understanding-Gruppe (4Culture, Text+, 4Memory und 4Objects), wie wir am besten gemeinsam auf die Situation reagieren.
Wir werden selbstverständlich mit unserer Participants und mit unserer Community kommunizieren, sobald uns belastbare Informationen vorliegen.

We are pleased to announce that we have now submitted our application in the third and final round of the NFDI funding call. Our revised application builds upon the intensive community engagement that shaped our second-round application, strengthening the plans for our consortium in the areas recommended in the feedback we received earlier this year.
The next stage will be a presentation for the evaluators held between mid December and early February. We should know by next May whether we have received a recommendation from the DFG’s Expert Committee for funding. If approved, our consortium will begin its activities in January 2023.
We will soon update our website, https://4memory.de, with more detailed information about our measures and tasks as part of our aims to improve research data management for the historically oriented humanities.

As we noted in May, 4Memory is participating in the third round of the NFDI funding call by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Over the summer, the co-applicants have been hard at work revising our application and working together with our many participants across the community to strengthen our submission and to ensure that the historically oriented humanities will have a voice in the NFDI.
In August, we submitted our binding Letter of Intent (here a direct link to the pdf-version), which lays out the institutions and people who make up our planned consortium as well as 4Memory’s aims.

We are pleased to continue building upon the extensive community building that we undertook during our second-round application: nearly all of the over 70 participant organisations from the second round will be part of our new application, and we have even gained a few new ones! As before, we continue to work closely with our fellow humanities consortia (4Culture, 4Objects and Text+), with whom we have a joint Memorandum of Understanding.
The coming weeks will see us busily engaged in finishing off our revised application, to be submitted before the deadline on 2 November. We look forward to being able to announce – both here and on Twitter – that our new application has been sent in!

Das Expertengremium Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) der DFG hat abschließend über alle Anträge aus der zweiten Ausschreibungsrunde zum Aufbau der NFDI beraten. Wir haben am 10. Mai 2021 eine offizielle Rückmeldung zu unserem Antrag erhalten. Demnach hat die Begutachtungsgruppe zwar die Förderung unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen bzw. Auflagen empfohlen, das NFDI-Expertengremium sich jedoch leider noch nicht für eine Förderempfehlung für 4Memory ausgesprochen. Seitens der Gutachtenden wird NFDI4Memory das Potential zugeschrieben, „als zentraler Bestandteil der NFDI-Gesamtstruktur zu fungieren“. Das Expertengremium sieht den Bedarf, die in der Begutachtung genannten Aspekte zu bearbeiten und „erwartet, dass NFDI4Memory in der Lage sein wird, in einem überarbeiteten Antrag im Rahmen einer Neueinreichung die Punkte vollumfänglich zu adressieren“.
Die Begutachtungsgruppe der DFG hat die Relevanz, die Reichweite und den Reifegrad von 4Memory in ihrer Stellungnahme hervorgehoben und die institutionelle Bandbreite der Antragstellenden sowie die Qualifikation aller rund 80 beteiligten Einrichtungen als „erstklassig“ bewertet. Sie hat festgestellt, dass 4Memory die historische Forschung in ihrer epochalen und disziplinären Breite „ausgezeichnet repräsentiert“ und in der Fachdisziplin „zentral verankert“ ist.
Diese positiven Einschätzungen bestärken uns darin, an der Zusammensetzung von 4Memory festzuhalten, zu der ausdrücklich alle Participants und Partner gehören. Auch wenn wir jetzt nicht unmittelbar in die NFDI aufgenommen werden, sind wir aber ermutigt, mit einem überarbeiteten Antrag in der dritten Runde erneut anzutreten. Die elf antragstellenden Einrichtungen („co-applicants“) haben bereits alle ihr anhaltendes Engagement für die Konsortialinitiative bestätigt.
Wir freuen uns auf die Fortsetzung der Zusammenarbeit und gehen ebenso motiviert wie zuversichtlich in die nächste Antragsrunde.

The structure and activities of the NFDI will be undertaken both by the consortia representing particular scientific and scholarly communities as well as through the contributions of individual institutions to the activities of the NFDI association itself.
The recently established association NFDI e.V. is now open to membership by institutions that can further its goals of supporting scholarship and science through a national research data infrastructure across various fields of study, particularly those institutions that are part of existing or planned NFDI consortia.
The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is the lead applicant institution for the NFDI4Memory consortium, which represents the community of the historically oriented humanities.
We are pleased to announce that the IEG has now been confirmed as a member of NFDI e.V., and it is joined by the following 4Memory co-applicant institutions as institutional members:

As both a planned consortium and through its individual institutional members of NFDI e.V., 4Memory aims to contribute to the overall goals of the NFDI, to work together with other consortia across disciplines (particularly with our partners in the humanities), and to serve its community.
We look forward to working together, as a consortium and as institutional members of NFDI e.V. in meeting these goals.
Der Historikertag 2021 wird im Oktober aufgrund der Pandemie nun weitgehend digital oder hybrid stattfinden. Mit dabei ist die AG Digitale Geschichtswissenschaft, die alle Beiträge online anbietet.
Während die Spotlights (Vorstellung digitaler Projekte) am 4. Oktober 2021 sowie weitere Diskussionsrunden und die Mitgliederversammlung am 7. Oktober 2021 stattfinden, organisiert die AG Digitale Geschichtswissenschaft des Verbands der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands gemeinsam mit der NFDI-Konsortialinitiative 4Memory eine Workshopreihe zu digitalen Themen, Techniken und Weiterbildungsangeboten. Sie startete mit der Tagung „Digital History“ (1.-3. März 2021) und reicht bis zum Beginn des Historikertags.

A central aim of 4Memory is to spark a thorough evaluation of the nature of digital data and how they have the potential to change the methods of historically oriented humanities disciplines. Our Task Area 5 (Data Culture) has a primary responsibility for encouraging reflection upon and the (re)use of research data (and corresponding digital methods) and fostering a distinct data culture in our community.
That’s why we are working together with the German Historical Institute Washington and several other partners (the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), the Chair of Digital History at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, and the Department of History at Stanford University) to present the conference “Datafication in the Historical Humanities: Reconsidering Traditional Understandings of Sources and Data” (December 9-11, 2021) at the GHI.
The conference is as of now being planned as an on-site event, with contingency plans being developed in case this should turn out not to be possible.

Dear members of the 4Memory community,
Before the year ends, we wanted to send you a short update on the progress of our initiative to build a consortium within the NFDI for the historically oriented humanities.
At the end of September, after a long process of dialogue and communication with our community, we submitted our extensive and detailed application.
On Friday 11 December, five representatives of 4Memory presented the consortium at an evaluation colloquium organised by the DFG and answered questions posed by the international review panel.
We will receive written feedback in January, which we will answer by the end of February. In March, the expert committee will give its recommendation to the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz – GWK), which will reach a final decision on the NFDI funding applications of the current (second) round in June.
